Gut Health 101: 5 Ways to Improve Gut Health Today!

You’ve figured out that your gut health need some extra TLC. So what can you actually do about it?

Here are my 5 tips to help you improve your gut health today. Listen to this episode here.

  1. Add More Fiber: Fiber comes from all plant foods and fiber can help to feed the good gut bacteria. Over time, this will help to improve your gut health. It is recommended for women to have at a minimum 25 g fiber daily, while for men, at least 35 g fiber daily is recommended. Aim for not just a higher volume of fiber, but also a wide variety of fiber each week. Experts recommend at least 30 kinds of plant foods each week .

  2. Add More Probiotics: Probiotics is another name for good gut bacteria. There are several different strains of good gut bacteria and these are found in lots of different foods and supplements. Consider adding fermented foods, like sauerkraut, kimchi or yogurt, or probiotic supplements to your daily routine.

  3. Reduce Stress: There is something called the Gut Brain Axis, which basically shows that anything happening in the gut can impact the brain, and vice versa. So, if you are experiencing high stress, it can impact your gut health negatively. To start managing your stress, try techniques such as exercise, yoga, breath work, meditation and/or looking at ways to take remove or reduce stressors from your work and personal life.

  4. Reduce or Eliminate Smoking and/or Alcohol: Both smoking and alcohol consumption can have a negative impact on gut health. Regular alcohol consumption has actually been shown to kill up to 50% of the good bacteria in your gut, and smoking can be linked to acid reflux or gastroesophageal reflux disease, GERD.

  5. Stay Hydrated: Drinking adequate water daily can help to prevent constipation, help to break down food to be digested, reduces inflammation in the gut and reduces the risk of “leaky gut” or having a permeable gut which allows harmful substances and undigested food from the digestive system into the blood stream. This can create inflammation in the gut lining as the intestinal walls become more permeable.

All of these 5 tips are hugely helpful to improving gut health. Which one will you try today? Let me know in the comments.
