Tips for Staying Healthy while Traveling
One of the best things about life is being able to travel. Whether it is traveling within the same country or worldwide, traveling allows you to see a whole myriad of beautiful locations, whilst getting to experience new and delicious foods!
The potential downside of traveling is that it can be challenging to eat healthy. However, with the right mindset and the following tips, staying healthy while traveling can be so much easier and more enjoyable too.
Set boundaries
It can be helpful to set healthy boundaries while you’re traveling. Boundaries can be useful as they can provide clear guidelines on what your priorities are plus when you are going to take aligned action on those priorities every day. For instance, if staying healthy is a priority for you, it may be helpful to communicate with those that you’re traveling with that you will be hitting the hotel gym each morning, or would like to start the day with a balanced breakfast instead of a grab and go pastry, or that you want to stop at the local grocery store to stock up on water and healthy snacks. Having a clear structure to your day, will make it a lot easier to stick to your healthy goals.
If you’re new to setting boundaries for your health, I suggest picking between 1-3 boundaries to practice setting and enforcing while traveling. Any more than that and it may feel overwhelming, as well as take the enjoyment out of your traveling adventure.
Consider your timezone
Time Zones can play a big role in your travels whether it is a local time change or an international one. These time changes can have a huge impact to your sleep, hunger levels and energy levels.
When traveling, consider the time zone of the location you’re leaving from and going to, as well as being mindful of energy drops as you travel. Lack of sleep upon arrival in a new location can greatly increase your hunger levels and cravings for highly refined carbs and sugar. It may be helpful to keep healthy snacks on hand, or get a good night’s rest upon landing in a new location. In addition, traveling can be very dehydrating, so being able to have access to clean water, will be very helpful once arriving at your accommodation.
It is also helpful to have good internet access to be able to search for local delivery services, grocery stores or even gyms where you can workout. If your accommodation doesn’t have good internet access you may also consider VPN. You may want to do some research to see is VPN worth it.
Stick to a routine
As with everything in life, when you have a routine, things are a lot easier. The same applies when traveling and staying healthy. Set yourself a routine that is realistic and that you can stick to. Perhaps having your vitamins first thing in the morning is easier than trying to remember to take them before bed time when you’re exhausted from your day of sightseeing.
Find a balance of things you want to do while traveling with a few healthy priorities, such as making time throughout your traveling days for sightseeing, working out, spending time with friends & family, and prepping a few healthy snacks or meals. There are plenty of online apps that you can use to help set a routine, it may be worth signing up to one if you find it challenging. Utilizing the alarm clock or calendar feature on smart phones can also be a beneficial tool for creating a simple yet effective healthy routine.
Staying healthy while traveling may seem challenging at first, however with these simple tips, you can make it work! The trick is routine and being consistent, the more you get used to doing both, the easier it is. All that’s left to say is enjoy your travels and take plenty of photos of all the incredible places you travel while staying true to your healthy self!
