Live Cooking Show: Indonesian Fried Rice

A Family Favorite

In today's live cooking show, I am sharing one of my family's favorite recipes, Indonesian Fried Rice!

This recipe was suggested by my friend Stephanie, in my Facebook Group, Get Nourished with Renata. In this group, I do a live Cooking Show every week to share healthy and delicious recipes. Stephanie suggested sharing an Indonesian recipe since we both have Indonesian heritage. So I thought, what better way to introduce others to Indonesian food, than with a quick and easy Fried rice recipe!

Indonesian Fried Rice

What I love about Indonesian Fried Rice is that it is the perfect contrast of salty and sweet.

Sweet???

Yes, you heard me right!

This Fried Rice uses a special ingredient that adds a ton of flavor. It is... Kecap Manis! That is the Indonesian name which basically means sweet soy sauce. You can find this sweet soy sauce at most grocery stores or online. It adds a nice balance of sweet and salty to the fried rice.

If you can't find kecap manis you can use equal parts soy sauce and honey. In fact, for the live cooking show today, i did not have kecap manis, so I used this same alternative.

Check out the Facebook live to see how I made this awesome meal:

Indonesian Fried Rice

Make this quick and easy fried rice to use up leftovers and get your kids to eat veggies!

  • 1 tsp vegetable oil
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 onion, (diced)
  • 1 carrot, (diced)
  • 1 garlic clove, (finely sliced)
  • 1 cup kale, (finely chopped)
  • 1 cup shredded meat, (such as chicken, turkey)
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp honey
  • 2 cups pre-cooked rice, (such as jasmine, basmati etc.)
  1. Heat a large pan or wok over medium high heat and add the oil.

  2. Once the oil is hot, crack one of the eggs into the pan and cook to desired doneness.

  3. Remove the egg from the pan and reserve to top the fried rice with later.

  4. Add the onions and carrots to the pan and saute for 2 minute.

  5. Add in the garlic and stir till fragrant, about 1 minute.

  6. Add in 3/4 of the kale, reserving the rest as a garnish for the fried rice, and the meat. Toss to combine.

  7. Pour in the soy sauce and honey, and stir well to combine.

  8. Crack the second egg directly into the hot pan. Using a spatula, stir the egg to scramble it in the pan and mix it in with the ingredients.

  9. Add in the rice, and stir very well to coat all the rice with the soy/veggie/meat mixture.

  10. Spread the rice into a single layer and allow to toast on the bottom for a couple of mins.

  11. Mix the rice, and again, spread it out into a thin layer to toast once more, for another couple of mins.

  12. Taste and adjust seasonings as desired.

  13. Divide the fried rice in half, and spoon half into the serving dish. Top the fried rice with the egg and a sprinkling of finely chopped kale.

  14. Enjoy immediately or allow to cool, store in airtight containers as awesome meal prep ideas!

NOTE: Feel free to sub meat for more veggies.
