I truly appreciate you all so much!!! Thank you!
I love Mangos!
To continue with my love of mangos, I thought it would be fun to share my newest mango recipe creation... my Mangonada Collagen Smoothie!
I was first introduced to Mangonadas from my friend, Jaki. She told me it was her favorite treat and described it to me. It is a mango sorbet that is topped with a Mexican Chamoy sauce and sprinkled with Tajin spices.
Basically, it is the perfect combination of sweet mangos, slightly salty Chamoy sauce and spicy Tajin spices.
But what is Chamoy and Tajin??
Chamoy is actually a salted fruit brine. Ok, that might sound weird but let me explain. Apricot, plum or mango is used as a the fruit base which is then packed in dry salt or a brine. Sometimes vinegar is used. Once all the moisture from the fruit is drawn out, the resulting brine is then seasoned with chile powder. The flavor of chamoy is slightly salty, spicy and a little sour.
Tajin is a spice mixture of dried, ground chilies, sea salt and dehydrated lime juice. You can even get Tajin spices made from habaneros! That stuff is really spicy!
I've seen people use Tajin on fruit, mostly mangos or watermelon. It's that awesome combo of spicy and sweet that keeps your tastebuds wanting more.
It sounded absolutely delicious! I knew I had to try it!
My First Mangonada
I tried my very first Mangonada at SeaWorld over the summer. I had seen so many people with Mangonadas walking around SeaWorld. They looked incredibly refreshing, with the ice cold mango sorbet and the vibrant red Chamoy sauce drizzled over the top. So, after some encouragement from Jaki, I set out to try the infamous Mangonada.
IT WAS TERRIBLE. It was waaaaay too salty and almost impossible to eat. Ok, to be 100% truthful, I obviously ate it all. I mean, it was $5 so I wasn't going to let it go to waste!
But I knew that I could make a better Mangonada at home. So I set out to do so.
Healthifying Mangonadas
I love taking recipes and adding a healthy twist to it. So to amp up the nutritional benefits of my homemade Mangonada, I added some collagen protein.
Collagen is the most abundant protein in the body that makes up skin, bone, muscles and ligaments. Collagen supplements are becoming more and more popular as people are seeing benefits from it such as improved skin and hair health, reduction in joint pain and increased muscle mass.
Adding unflavored collagen to this smoothie helps to increase the protein content. Pairing protein and carbohydrates (from the mango) helps to elongate your blood sugar levels. That means no crazy spikes or dips in your blood sugar which can affect your energy levels and mood. This smoothie is such a great post-workout meal or even an afternoon snack when you need something a little sweet that is also good for you!
This is literally the easiest recipe to make. It only needs 3 ingredients: mango, collagen protein and water/ice. Then just blend it together to create your thick and creamy smoothie.
To make this smoothie more like a typical Mangonada you might buy, top it with Chamoy sauce, a sprinkling of Tajin or just Cayenne or Paprika powder mixed together and a few extra mango cubes too.
I love this summery smoothie! It has all the fresh, sweetness of mango paired perfectly with the spicy and salty Chamoy sauce and Tajin. Plus, I love that I can make this at home whenever I feel like. And it is way more flavorful and delicious than the first Mangonada I tried! I also love the additional health benefits of the extra protein. Yum!
I hope you give this recipe a try! Especially if you haven't tried Mangonadas before, I hope that you will love this recipe! Tag me nourish_with_renata on IG or Facebook. I'd love to see what you make!
